    Introduction

How does Human Factors fit into the world of diving?

Most accidents and incidents in diving are not primarily caused by undetected technical failures, poor buoyancy, or incorrect trim. Instead, they often stem from several elements, complacency, communication breakdowns, poor decision-making, lack of situational awareness, skill fade or ineffective teamwork and leadership. The individuals involved in any dive environment play a significant role in the outcome, even when technical issues or malfunctions occur.

With a career steeped in military aviation and a love for diving, Mike Mason has developed an in-depth understanding of Human Factors, which have been integral to his professional life.  As he became more involved in diving, he recognized the valuable content that Gareth Lock brought into the diving industry and reached out to get involved with The Human Diver.  Mike is now one of the instructors delivering various courses throughout Australia.

Why should I take a Human Factors in Diving class?

To avoid mistakes, we must first learn from them. Everyone encounters errors at some point, but by understanding and managing risks, improving communication, and learning from both common and unexpected mistakes, we can minimize risks and foster a safer diving environment for ourselves and others. The Human Diver courses will aide you in understanding this theory and how to apply it in the diving environment.

Are these classes for newbie divers?

These classes are for everyone, from those just beginning their scuba adventures to highly experienced advocates of the sport.

What will I learn in these classes?

You’ll learn practical skills to identify and manage potential errors, improve your decision-making under pressure, and work more effectively with dive buddies or teams.

How does this class improve dive safety?

By focusing on Human Factors rather than specific equipment or diver failure traits you'll learn to recognise and manage risks, communicate more effectively, and anticipate potential issues before they escalate.

Why should I focus on human factors rather than just dive skills?

By practising our technical skills regularly they can become second nature, however, a dive starts long before entering the water and continues far beyond exiting. Generic dive training does not necessarily concentrate on these periods in the dive process much beyond equipment set-up, briefing, the dive and dismantling. The Human Diver training bridges this gap, empowering you to become a safer and more aware diver.

I have a few buddies interested, can we do a course together?

Yes, Mike is willing to travel anywhere in Australia to facilitate group bookings and is relatively flexible with dates. Organising a group booking for you and your buddies or dive shop is super easy, we ask for a minimum of 4 divers per group and you're good to go. Get in touch to find out more.
